In Loving Memory Of John Jelinek

In Remembrance

Of

John Jelinek

1948-2013

John was born in Gary, Indiana. He began hunting at age 11 and with his double barrel 12 gauge Eastern Arms shotgun he pursued small game. At 15, his enthusiasm turned to waterfowl and as an adult, he and his Chesapeake Bay retrievers’ hunted 14 states. John became nicknamed “The Field General” for his decoy layouts and placements in the field.

When the Jerry Allen Marsh was completed in 1993, John became its’ official guardian. He monitored flood control, supervised controlled burns, and the building of nesting structures on this property. He wanted to take this project on since he was a founding member of the Northwest Indiana Chapter of Waterfowl USA and the vice president of this organization for 26 years. His desire for youth to enjoy waterfowl hunting led him to start the “Woodie” (Waterfowl USA Youth Members) hunting program at this marsh. Every Woodie member was given an assigned hunt date to participate with adult supervision. This is the only hunting program allowed on this property.

John was also a member/supporter of Wounded Warrior, Hunt of a Lifetime, National Wild Turkey Federation and Ducks Unlimited. He was a conservationist, working to preserve the wetlands for future generations.

His wife Barbara, of 43 years would like to thank the Northwest Indiana Chapter of Waterfowl USA and numerous donors from Indiana and Wisconsin for supporting and funding this remembrance. Also, for the White Oak Tree planted in John’s memory by Warren Webb, Richard Harris, Jim Porter and Dale Richter.
